| Lucia Lighting & Design Team Featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on May 11
Lucia Lighting & Design of Lynn was featured on the national hit show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on the Sunday, May 11th edition which was filmed in Maynard, Massachusetts. Show producers contacted owner Lucy Dearborn to donate a 7-foot-tall floor lamp created by a Middle eastern designer worth over $4,500 after seeing the lamp featured in an upscale regional publication. "We felt the dramatic lighting fixture would brighten each day of the family so we wanted to be part of this wonderful project. The mission of the show is so inspiring that we feel honored to be chosen to participate," says Dearborn.
The lamp was used for the child's room in the Maynard home of the Giunta family who was struck by tragedy when Paul was in a serious car crash en route from the hospital where his wife Renee had just given birth to their third child. The May 11 episode celebrates Paul's return home in a wheelchair after a two-year struggle including hospitalization, rehabilitation and living with his parents in a retirement community because his own home was not handicap accessible.
Lucia Lighting and Design's David Solimine and Lucy Dearborn were part of the massive team of volunteers that lent a hand to building a home in six days that typically takes three months. Solimine worked on the son's Dylan's room and was humbled and awed by the experience. "The feeling of hundreds of people working together towards a common end was amazing," he says. He was particularly touched when two families who had homes built showed up on the set to thank the crew.
When the crew needed special gold Chinese lanterns for a special effect on one of the child's room Solimine called Dearborn to see if there were any in stock at Lucia Lighting and Design. When they did not have the exact specifications for the job, Dearborn raced into China Town to get the lanterns and navigated through a sea of people on the streets to get the lanterns to the house.
"I was so touched to be a small part of the Herculean effort. The show's mission to help people and build community is inspirational," says Dearborn who has offered to assist the producers with their lighting needs through her international contacts in the industry and with the American Lighting Association.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC. The show has won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program, plus the People's Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show/Makeover and the Family Television Award for Best Alternative/Reality Program.
